The harbor seal is a small phocid. The most conspicuous feature of the variably colored coat is the presence of many fine to medium sized spots, usually with smaller numbers of ring-like markings and blotches. Pups have same body color as its mothers, light to dark gray. Five subspecies are recognized. One of them, P.v. stejnegeri ranges from either the end of the Alaska Peninsula or the eastern Aleutioans to the Commander Islands, Kamchatka, and through the Kuril Islands to Hokkaido in the western Pacific. |
