ACANTHURIDAE Acanthurus triostegus (photo by Ukkrit Satapoomin) Acanthurus triostegus (Linnaeus, 1758) Convict Surgeonfish D IX, 22-25; A III, 19-22; P1 14-16. Body deep, 1.8-1.9 in SL. Teeth fixed, denticulate on all of margin, with expanded incurved tips; adults with about 16 upper and 18 lower teeth. Caudal fin truncate to slightly emarginate, the caudal concavity 5.0-9.0 in SL. Caudal peduncle with 1 folding spine. Color: body light olivaceous gray dorsally, shading to white ventrally, with 5 narrow black bars on body and 1 on head through eye. Size: attaining to 27 cm. Distribution: occurring throughout the Indian and Pacific Oceans, except for the sea around the Arabian Peninsula. Remarks: found in rocky and coral reefs.
