Apogon fuscus Quoy and Gaimard, 1825 Gray Cardinalfish

Body oblong, moderately deep and compressed; lateral line well developed, extending posteriorly to caudal-fin base. Snout blunt. Posterior margin of preopercle serrated. No enlarged caninoid teeth on jaws. Base of anal fin subequal to base of second dorsal fin in length; caudal fin slightly emarginate. Color: body dark gray or gray brown dorsally, becoming pale gray ventrally, with several narrow dusky vertical bars on side; saddle-like blackish blotch on posterior part of caudal peduncle; a wedge-shaped oblique black line from ventral margin of eye to corner of preopercle. Size: 11 cm SL. Distribution: Indo-Pacific. Remarks: inhabits rocky or coral reefs. Randall (2005) placed this species in genus Ostorhinchus, previously treated as subgenus of Apogon.
