Body elongated, compressed. Head depressed; head shield granulated posteriorly; dorsomedian groove short, not reaching anteriorly to the level of posterior margin of eye; remarkable lateral projection in front of eye. Palatal teeth short, tip blunt, on a single pair of elliptical patches, located just posterior to upper oral valve. Maxillary barbel thick, flattened. Inner gill rakes present on all gill arches. Lateral line bifurcates behind caudal fin base. Color: body silvery; brownish dorsally; dorsal and caudal fins faintly darker, other fins pale; adipose fin pale with slightly dusky margin in some specimens. Size: 12-14 cm SL. Distribution: Phuket. Remarks: the present species resembles Arius arius, but the former differs from the latter in having remarkable preorbital projection, dorsal fin spine without filament, and pale adipose fin.
