Scales enlarged above the pectoralfin base and just behind the gill opening. A prominent groove before eye. Five or 6 rows of small anteriorly projecting spines on caudal peduncle. Color: body yellowish gray to brown, the centers o scales dark brown or greenish. Size: maximum 80 cm. Distribution: widely distributed in tropical Indo-West Pacific, from Red Sea eastward to Tuamotu Islands, north to southern Japan. Remarks: occurring solitary in coral reefs; nest-guarding females aggressive.
