Scales enlarged above pectoral-fin base and just behind gill opening to form a flexible tympanum. A groove in front of eye. Longitudinal rows of spines following scale centers on posterior third of body. Color: dark brown to with a vertical greenish yellow streak from eye to lower pectoral base; caudal fin yellowish brown with a white margin . Size: maximum 25 cm. Distribution: widespread in Indo-West Pacific, from East Africa to Samoa, north to southern Japan. Remarks: males with a longitudinal purplish blue band on ventral side from chin to abdomen.
