Body elongate in males, short in females. Orbital cirrus absent. Cirri on anterior and posterior margins of anterior nostril. Gill opening continuous across ventral surface of head. Dorsal fin with notch. Caudal-fin rays unbranched; upper and lower rays elongated in males. Color: body black anteriroly and yellow posteriorly, or body black dorsally with a broad white lateral band and dusky belly with or without a yellow tail. Size: attaining to 13 cm. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific, including Maldives, Ryukyu Islands, Micronesia and Great Barrier Reef. Remarks: occurring on lagoon and seaward reefs in areas mixed corals and algae-covered rocks at depths of 2-25 m. (Hisashi Imamura)
