Body ovoid, strongly compressed. Dorsal contour of head before upper eye convex. Snout short, equal to or slightly shorter than eye diameter. Mouth moderate, reaching to between anterior margin and center of lower eye; teeth on jaws small, closely spaced. Both eyes on left side of head; many small spines along anterior margin of eyes in males; interorbital space wide, concave. Gill rakers short and pointed, rudimentary on upper limb, well-developed on lower limb. Pectoral-fin rays on eyed side greatly elongate in males larger than 12 cm SL. Scales ctenoid on eyed side, cycloid on eyeless side. Color: eyed side of body brownish with many dark or black blotches, spots, and rings; a distinct dark blotch on middle of straight part of lateral line; eyeless side of body whitish. Size: maximum length 30 cm. Distribution: Indo-Pacific, from Red Sea to Hawaii and Tuamotu, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia. Remarks: inhabits sandy and muddy bottoms. Feeds on benthic animals. Marketed fresh.
