Body fusiform and elongate, moderately compressed. Scales above lateral line to origin of dorsal fin 8-10. Color: upper body blue, lower body white to pale bluish; 3-6 yellow longitudinal stripes on side, 2-3 of these stripes covering or above lateral line, and 2-3 below lateral line; caudal fin with an indistinct bluish or dark streak within each lobe, the tips of caudal lobes with a large black blotch; pectoral, pelvic, and anal fins white; axil of pectoral fin black; a black triangular patch on upper base of pectoral fin; dorsal fin light blue to pale with a black distal border. Size: maximum size about 35 cm. Distribution: widespread tropical Indo-Malayan Archipelagos. Remarks: found primarily around coral reefs, with a preference for coral lagoons. Feeds on zooplankton in large midwater groups. Schools together with other caesionids; caught by drive-in nets, gill nets, hook and line, and traps. (Yukio Iwatsuki)
