Body oblong, compressed. Lower jaw somewhat stout, projecting beyond upper jaw. Breast completely scaled. Straight part of lateral line shorter than curved part, with 21-37 weak scutes posteriorly. Color: body silvery gray dorsally, silvery white ventrally; posterior margin of preopercle dark or black; caudal fin yellowish. Size: maximum length about 50 cm. Distribution: widely distributed in Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to Fiji, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia. Remarks: occurring in shallow coastal waters. Marketed fresh.
