Body very deep; snout short, pointed; underside of head with rounded profile. Lateral line complete. Fourth dorsal-fin spine greatly elongate, filamentous. Caudal fin truncate to slightly rounded. Color: overall white, with 2 broad, oblique, black bands on sides, the first continuous with black pelvic fins and the second ending on posterior half and extending anteriorly to longest soft ray of anal fin; soft dorsal and caudal fins yellow; snout and interorbital blackish. Size: maximum length about 20 cm. Distribution: Indo-Pacific, from South Africa and Red Sea to Hawaii. Remarks: inhabits rocky reefs and aggregates in midwater at depths of 3-200 m. Occurs in small to large aggregations. Feeds on plankton.
