Body elongate, strongly compressed, belly sharp, but without any scutes; pectoral fin short, 11-13% SL. Mouth large, directed upward; both jaws with large canine teeth anterioly. Scales cycloid, very small. Color: dark blue-green dorsally, silvery ventrally; black marking on the upper part of dorsal fin; caudal fin blackish. Size: maximum 1 m SL, commonly 30-50 cm SL. Distribution: widely distributed in Indo-West Pacific from Red Sea and South Africa to Solomon Is., north to southern Japan. Remarks: occurring in inshore waters. Feeds on small fishes, crustaceans, squids, etc. Marketed fresh.
