Ophiocara porocephala (Valenciennes, 1837) Northern Mud Sleeper

Body moderately elongate, subcylindrical and compressed posteriorly. Head depressed; dorsal surface of head flat; jaws large, extending posteriorly to middle of eye; lower jaw protruding beyond upper jaw. Pelvic fins widely separated. Cheek and operculum with cycloid scales; predorsal scales extending anteriorly to snout. Color: blackish brown, sometimes with irregular barred pattern on body; in young, numerous minute pale spots scattered on head, body and dorsal and anal fins. Size: 45 cm. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific. Remarks: chiefly found in tidal estuaries. Carnivorous. Often marketed fresh.
