Body deep, compressed; anterodorsal profile almost straight. Dorsal and anal-fin spines strong; second dorsal fin spine longer than the third; second anal-fin spine robust, nearly the same in length of anal-fin base; caudal fin short, deeply forked, tips broadly rounded. Color: body brownish silver dorsally, brilliant silver ventrally, with indistinct dark longitudinal stripes along scale rows above and 4-6 rows immediately below lateral line; often 4-11 indistinct vertical narrow dark bars on side of body; anal and pelvic fins yellow. Size: maximum length about 37 cm. Distribution: Indo-Pacific, from western India to Micronesia. Remarks: inhabits soft bottom. Juveniles often observed in estuarine waters. (Seishi Kimura)
