D IX, 10; A III, 7; P1 15; LLp 34-36; usually 2 1/2 scale rows between 5th dorsal-fin spine base and lateral line; usually 4 1/2 scales above lateral line, 7 1/2-9 1/2 below; 2nd dorsal-fin spine slightly shorter than 3rd dorsal-fin spine; 2nd anal-fin spine more robust than 3rd.

Body relatively deep and then, becoming slender with growth. Color: body silvery with 4 or 5 diffuse, dark saddle patches mainly along back in life, extending down sides to midline. Size: maximum length about 12 cm SL but commonly less than 10 cm. Distribution: Indian Coast, Andaman Sea, northern Gulf of Thailand, southern China, and southwestern Taiwan. Remarks: occurs in estuaries, lower reaches of coastal rivers and mangroves in juvenile, and then, in coastal waters in adults. This species has long been confused with Gerres lucidus Cuvier, 1830, being a junior synonym of G. limbatus. (Yukio Iwatsuki)
