GERREIDAE Gerres setifer, 7.9 cm SL (preserved specimen; photo by Yukio Iwatsuki) Gerres setifer (Hamilton, 1822) Small Bengal Silverbiddy D X, 9 or IX, 10; A III, 7; P1 15; LLp 34-35; usually 3 1/2 scale rows between 5th dorsal-fin spine base and lateral line; 4 1/2 or 5 1/2 scales above lateral line, 8 1/2 - 9 1/2 below; two predorsal bones (0/0/2/1+1/); last dorsalfin spine/penultimate dorsal-fin spine 1.15-1.20; last dorsal-fin spine longer than penultimate dorsal-fin spine. Body moderately deep, and compressed. Color: body silvery without bars. Size: small species, maximum length about 11 cm SL. Distribution: endemic from northern Bengal bay, to the Andaman Sea. Remarks: occurs in estuaries, lower reaches of coastal rivers and mangroves in juvenile, and then, in coastal waters in adults. This species has easily been confused with G. decacanthus, G. chrysops, and G. limbatus. (Yukio Iwatsuki)
