Body moderately elongate, compressed. Head compressed; jaws extending posteriorly around a vertical through posterior margin of eye; gill opening reaching anteriorly to a vertical through preopercular margin. Pelvic fins united medially; frenum present. Scales ctenoid posteriorly, cycloid anteriorly; head and pectoral-fin base naked. Sensory canals and pores present on head; distinct transverse sensory-papillae rows on cheek; a pair of short longitudinal sensory papillae rows just behind chin. Color: head yellowish white, mottled with dark brownish gray; body yellowish white, with 3-4 broad, faint olive gray saddles; a series of 4 round blotches (about size of eye) on midlateral body, the anteriormost one vivid and narrowly edged by yellowish white (forming characteristic ocellated mark); numerous minute bright blue dots scattered on side of body; belly with alternating yellowish white and dark brownish gray barred pattern; anal fin with ca. 5 dusky bars along rays. Size: 7.0 cm SL. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific. Remarks: found in protected bays with sandy-mud bottoms and rubbles; symbiotically associated with alpheid shrimps.
