Body moderately elongate and compressed. Head compressed; lower jaw projecting beyond upper jaw; gill opening extending anteriorly beyond a vertical through preopercular margin; anterior margin of tongue rounded or near truncate. Spines of first dorsal fin greatly elongate in male, not so in female; pelvic fins united medially; frenum present. No scales on head; body scales cycloid. Sensory canals and pores present on head; transverse pattern of sensory-papillae rows on cheek. Color: head and body pale gray to olive, with indistinct dusky mottles and many bright blue spots; a series of alternating red and yellow spots between first and second spines of first dorsal fin; many red spots scattered on second dorsal fin; many bright blue spots scattered on head and, sometimes, anterior part of body. Size: 3.5 cm SL. Distribution: Andaman Sea and Singapore. Remarks: found in shallow seagrass beds with sandy-mud bottoms; symbiotically associated with alpheid shrimps.
