Body moderately deep; dorsal profile of head straight; snout pointed; 2 pairs of large recurved canines in jaws, the anterior pairs projecting, the posterior pairs outcurved. Head with large scales except interorbital, snout, and chin; predorsal scales 4. Males with long filaments from membrane tips of first 4 dorsal-fin spines. Caudal fin rounded. Color: body light red to brown, paler on ventral part of head, thorax, and abdomen; edges of scales whitish; a yellow-edged dark spot on opercle; a small dark spot behind eye, 1 enclosing anterior nostril, and 1 on first membrane of dorsal fin; small whitish and brown spots along lateral line. Size: maximum length about 9.5 cm. Distribution: Indo-Pacific, from Red Sea to Micronesia and Samoa. Remarks: a secretive species inhabiting coral reefs where it hinds among soft corals, benthic algae, or branching corals. Feeds on benthic invertebrates.
