Body moderately elongate. Teeth in jaws mostly in 2 rows, those across lower jaw in 5 rows, the canines of middle rows longer than those of upper side. Dorsal-fin origin midway between corner of mouth and gill opening. Anus before midbody. Color: variable, but usually brown to orangish brown with numerous small round, dark-edged white spots; tip of tail white; gill opening in a black blotch. Size: maximum length 120 cm. Distribution: Indo- Pacific, including coast of East Africa, southern Japan, Micronesia, Hawaiian Islands, Great Barrier Reef, New Caledonia and Galapagos Islands. Remarks: feeding primarily on fishes and to a lesser extent on crustaceans.
