Body elliptical. Dorsal contour of head with a distinct notch just before upper eye. Snout short, nearly equal to eye diameter. Mouth moderate, reaching to center of lower eye; teeth on jaws small, pointed. Dorsal-fin origin just anterior to anterior margin of upper eye and just above or slightly posterior to posterior nostril. Scales small, ctenoid on eyed side, cycloid on eyeless side Color: eyed side of body brownish with five or more large ocellii; body and median fins on eyed side with dark dots and rings. Size: maximum length 24 cm SL. Distribution: Indo-Australian Archipelago. Remarks: inhabits sandy and muddy bottoms. Marketed fresh. (Seishi Kimura)
