Body oval, deep and strongly compressed; a long spine at corner of preopercle; subopercle with spines; interopercle and suborbital serrate; postemporal with spinules. Caudal fin rounded. Color: overall orange brown with narrow, vertical, irregular dark-orange lines on sides, extending onto spinous dorsal fin; caudal fin, caudal peduncle, and posterior part of dorsal fin black; narrow white submarginal band on caudal fin; thorax and pelvic fins orange; pectoral-fin base oranges; orange ring around eye. Size: maximum length about 15 cm. Distribution: Indian Ocean, ranging east to Bali and Java. Remarks: inhabits coral reefs at depths of 10-30 m. Found solitary, in pairs or in small groups. Feeds on algae.
