Body oblong, very deep and compressed; a long spine at corner of preopercle. Middle rays of soft portion of dorsal fin of large adults produced into filament; soft portion of anal fins round; caudal fin rounded. Color: body with alternating diagonal narrow yellow and broader purplish blue stripes; snout and cheek bluish white; a curved blue-edged black bar through eye with a greenish yellow bar just behind that confluent with same color on forehead; a broad black bar at level of pectoral fin; caudal fin orange-yellow. Juveniles black with a white ring posteriorly on side surrounded by partial circles of blue and white; head with blue and white lines. Size: maximum length about 35 cm. Distribution: Indo-Pacific, from East Africa and Red Sea to Tuamotu Archipelago. Remarks: inhabits coral reefs, drop-offs, and rocky reefs at depths of 3-70 m. Found solitary or in pairs. Feeds on sponges and tunicates.
