POMACANTHIDAE Pomacanthus xanthometopon (photo by Mark Strickland) Pomacanthus xanthometopon (Bleeker, 1853) Bluefaced Angelfish D XIII-XIV, 16-17; A III, 16-18; LLp 46-47; LR 50-52; GR 5 + 11-12. Body oblong, very deep and compressed; a long spine at corner of preopercle. Soft portions of dorsal and anal fins round; caudal fin rounded. Color: scales on sides bluish with yellow edge; breast, pectoral fins, caudal fin, and rear part of dorsal and anal fins yellow; black spot at rear base of dorsal fin; a yellow mask encompassing eyes; head below eye blue with small yellow spots. Juveniles blackish with about 18-20 narrow blue and white bars on side. Size: maximum length about 38 cm. Distribution: Eastern Indian Ocean and western Pacific, from Maldives to Vanuatu and Great Barrier Reef, north to southern Japan. Remarks: inhabits coral reefs and drop-offs at depths of 5-20 m. Found solitary or in pairs. Feeds on sponges and tunicates.
