Body relatively slender, compressed. Posterior margin of preopercle smooth. Suborbital scaled, with entire ventral edge. Teeth on jaws conical, muliserial; teeth of outermost row larger than those of inner rows. Caudal fin forked; some conspicuous projecting spine-like rays at upper and lower edges of caudal-fin base. Color: head and body dark gray, with paler center of each scale; caudal peduncle and/or caudal fin frequently with yellow marking(s); blackish vertical bars along posterior margin of preopercle and opercle, as well as a black blotch at pectoral-fin base. Size: 12.0 cm SL. Distribution: Indian Ocean, Andaman Sea and western Indonesia (eastward to Bali). Remarks: found in coral reefs, forming aggregation.
