SCARIDAE Chlorurus sordidus (photo by Ukkrit Saptapoomin) Chlorurus sordidus (Forsskål, 1775) Bullethead Parrotfish D IX, 10; A III, 9; P1 14-16; GR 42-51. Head bluntly rounded anteriorly. Teeth fused to form dental plates; dental plates relatively smooth, and broadly exposed; large adults with up to 2 canine teeth on side at rear of upper dental plates; 2 rows of scales on cheek; median predorsal scales 3-4 (rarely 3); caudal fin usually truncate in adults. Color: initial phase dark brown, becoming red around mouth; 2 longitudinal rows of 5 or 6 whitish spots often present on side of body; a broad whitish bar containing a large round blackish spot sometimes present on caudal peduncle. Terminal males green, the edges of scales salmon pink except caudal peduncle which is solid light green; thorax and abdomen pale salmon with indistinct green stripes; upper side of body sometimes suffused with light yellow; front of snout lavender-pink, bordered by blue green bands. Juveniles with 4 dark brown stripes. Size: maximum length about 40 cm. Distribution: Indo-Pacific, from Red Sea to Hawaii and Line Islands. Remarks: occurs in a variety of coral reef habitats to depths of at least 25 m.
