Snout length 6.7-9.1 in SL; anterior tip of snout with three short tentacles. Supraocular tentacle usually long, greater than orbit diameter. At least some pectoral-fin rays branched. Caudal fin rounded, without elongate outer rays. Color: body with several dark brown to dark red bars, each whitish interspace bisected by a narrow dark bar; last dark bar on caudal peduncle usually with a midlateral band extending to caudal-fin base. Softrayed portion of dorsal fin, and anal and caudal fins translucent with small blackish spots scattered on rays. Size: maximum length about 20 cm SL. Distribution: widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific, from South Africa east to the Samoa Islands, and southern Japan south to New South Wales, Australia. Remarks: common in lagoons, outer reef slopes among corals, and rocky littoral and sublittoral areas to depths of 73 m.
