Nape and anterior body highly arched, giving a humpback appearance. Interorbital space broad, its width 3.9-4.6 in head length. Upper posttemporal spine double. Upper opercular spine divided into two or more spines. Color: body color highly variable, strongly mottled with reddish to bluish and grayish blotches. Axil of pectoral fins black with white flecks inwardly, then red and yellow bands with an elongate black blotch in upper middle part of inner surface of pectoral fin. Size: maximum length 23.4 cm SL. Distribution: widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific, from South Africa east to the Hawaiian and Marquesas Islands, and southern Japan south to northern Australia. Remarks: occurs in shallow rocky and coral reefs.
