Body moderately elongate; body depth less than head length, 2.7-3.3 in SL. Head length 2.4-2.7 in SL. Dorsal-fin membranes distinctly incised between spines. Caudal fin rounded. Pectoral fin middle rays longest, its length 1.3-1.7 in head length. Longest pelvic-fin soft ray length 1.8-2.3 in head length. Scales on maxilla; no auxiliary scales on body. Color: body reddish brown to brownish red, darker posteriorly, sometimes with small pale spots and/or 4 faint, irregular, dark bars. Soft-rayed portions of dorsal and anal fins with small orange-red spots; outer triangular part of membranes between dorsalfin spines orange. Caudal fin with 2 white to bluish white bands converging posteriorly. Pectoral fins reddish brown basally, yellow distally. Size: maximum length 28 cm. Distribution: widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific, from South Africa east to French Polynesia and the Pitcairn Islands, including southern Japan and northern Australia. Remarks: found in outer reef areas, lagoons, back-reef areas and on the reef-top in depths of 1-60 m. Feeds mainly on fishes and crustaceans.(Hiroyuki Motomura)
