Body moderately elongate; body depth less than head length, 3.1-3.7 in SL. Preopercular margin smooth or with 1 or 2 short spines. Caudal fin rounded. Pectoral fins longer than pelvic fins. Lateral line extending onto caudal-fin base; body scales cycloid, deeply embedded. Color: body grayish brown, without distinct markings. A large ocellated black spot on opercle. Size: maximum length 13 cm. Distribution: distributed in the Indo-Pacific, from east coast of Africa east to the Society Islands, including southern Japan. Remarks: found on coral heads of lagoon and seaward reefs in depths of 3-15 m. Secretes a skin toxin under stress from epidermal glandular cells.(Hiroyuki Motomura)
