Body elongate. Inner teeth at front of jaws and side of lower jaw 2-3 times longer than outer teeth. Lips finely papillate. Preopercular margin with 6-17 serrae. Pelvic fins short, 1.8-2.0 in head length. Scales on dorsal snout reaching only to posterior nostrils or slightly before. Color: body reddish brown, with 8 narrow, yellowish brown stripes; middle 4 stripes extending from behind eye. Fins without distinct markings. Size: maximum length 9 cm. Distribution: distributed in the Indo-Pacific, from east coast of Africa east to the Line Islands, including southern Japan and northeastern Australia. Remarks: found in caves and crevices in lagoon and seaward reefs in depths of 2-34 m.(Hiroyuki Motomura)
