Body oval, strongly compressed. Gill opening short, slit-like. Gill rakers very small, vestigial. Anterior dorosal and anal fins falcate. Caudal fin deeply forked, lower lobe often extended. Sensory canal area on temporal extending backward along lateral line. Color: head and body dark brownish silver dorsally, silvery white ventrally. Anal and caudal fins yellowish. Size: maximum length 60 cm. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific, from Persian Gulf to Indonesia. Remarks: found in coastal waters over muddy bottom. Marketed fresh.
