D VI-VII (usually VII), 39-43; A III, 32-36; P1 18-19; P2 I, 5; GR 1 + 10-11.

Body disk-like. Third dorsal-fin spine greatly elongate and filamentous. Caudal fin emarginate. Small ctenoid scales on head and body. Color: body white, yellowish posteriorly; two broad vertical black bars, the anterior from nape through eye to chest and pelvic fin, the posterior from dorsal fin to anal fin; black-edged orange saddlelike marking dorsally on snout; caudal fin black with submarginal white line. Size: maximum length 23 cm, commonly to 16 cm. Distribution: widely distributed in Indo-Pacific except Red Sea and Persian Gulf. Remarks: inhabits coral reefs or rocky shores. Feeds on sponges, bryozoans, small mollusks small crustaceans, hydroids, and tunicates.
