Dorsal fin continuous, usually with XIII spines and 10 soft rays, and preceded by an embedded, recumbent spine; anal fin with VII spines and 9 soft rays; pelvic fins with an inner and outer spines separated by 3 soft rays; spines venomous. Mouth small, terminal, not protractile; teeth small, incisiform, bicuspid or tricupsid. Similar family occurring in the Indo-West Pacific. Acanthuridae and Chaetodontidae are similar in body shape to Siganidae, but they have normal pelvic fins with one spine on the outer portion. Badan bulat telur, pipih, tertutup oleh sisik yang sangat kecil. Sirip punggung kontinyu, biasanya dengan XIII jari-jari keras yang tertanam; sirip dubur dengan VII jari-jari keras dan 9 jari-jari lunak; sirip perut dengan jari-jari keras didalam dan diluar dan dipisahakan oleh 3 jari-jari lunak; jari-jari keras berbisa. Mulut kecil, terminal, tidak dapat disembulkan; gigi kecil, incisiform, bicuspid atau tricupsid. Famili serupa yang terdapat di Indo-Pasifik Barat. Acanthuridae dan Chaetodontidae mirip dalam bentuk dengan Siganidae, tetapi mempunyai sirpi perut yang normal dengan satu jari-jari keras pada bagian luar.
