Side of caudal peduncle with a sharp spine or spines. Mouth small, terminal; small close-set teeth on jaws; no teeth on roof of mouth. Dorsal fin continuous with IV-IX spines and 19-33 soft rays; anal fin with II or III spines and 18-28 soft rays; pelvic fins with I spine and 3 or 5 soft rays; caudal fin emarginate to lunate. Similar family occurring in the Indo-West Pacific. Chaetodontidae, Pomacanthidae, and Ephippidae are similar in body shape to Acanthuridae, but they have no sharp spines on the caudal peduncle. Badan dari oval sampai bulat panjang, pipih, tertutup dengan sisik ctenoid berukuran kecil. Sisi batang ekor dengan duri tajam atau duri keras. Mulut kecil, terminal; rahang dengan gigi kecil yang saling menutup. Sirip punggung bersambung dengan IV-IX jari-jari keras dan 19-33 jari-jari lemah; sirip ekor dengan II atau III jari-jari keras dan 18-28 jari-jari lemah; sirip perut dengan I jari-jari keras dan 3 atau 5 jari-jari lemah; sirip ekor berlekuk sampai bulat sabit. Famili serupa yang terdapat di Indo-Pasifik Barat. Chaetodontidae, Pomacanthidae, and Ephippidae hampir sama dalam bentuk badan dengan Acanthuridae, tetapi mereka tidak mempunyai duri tajam pada sisi batang ekor.
