Cephalopholis formosa (Shaw and Nodder, 1812)

D IX, 15 - 17; A III, 7 - 8; P1 16 - 18 ; LLp 47 - 51; GR 7 - 10 + 15 - 18. Body not deep, the depth 2.5 to 2.9 times in SL. Caudal fin rounded; pectoral fins short, 1.6 - 1.8 in head. Snout largely scaled; maxilla partially scaled; scales on abdomen ctenoid. Color: dark brown to yellowish brown, with irregular dark blue lines on head, body and fins; snout, lips, and ventral part of head and chest with small dark blue spots. Size: maximum length about 34 cm. Distribution: Eastern Indian Ocean-West Pacific: western India to Philippines, north to southern Japan (Honshu), south to northern Australia. Remarks: reef-associated; non-migratory; depth range 10 - 30 m. It prefers shallow dead or silty reefs.
