These 52 dried specimens of seaweeds showed in this site were collected on the sand beach of Kamakura without removal of living plants from the rocks. All of these specimens were made by amateur collectors of marine algae in Kamakura: Ms. Junko Sugiyama, Ms. Mieko Tanaka, Ms. Mitsuko Kimura. They work as volunteers for "The Kamakura Green Ranger" and, as part of its activities, continue to collect seaweeds and create not only beautiful algal specimens but also seaweed pictures. About 2000 dried specimens of seaweeds which they collected from Kamakura between 2006 and 2011 are preserved in the algal herbarium of the National Museum of Nature and Science (Tsukuba City). |

"Kamakura" by Yurika Hara (2003) | "Daibutsu" by Mitsuko Kimura (2004) |
The picture of Daibutsu (Giant Buddha) on the front page of this site was created by Ms. Mitsuko Kimura using fragments of several seaweeds from Kamakura seacoast: Myagropsis myagroides, Sargassum ringgoldianum (curls of hair), Grateloupia lanceolata (face and body), Ulva pertusa (green forests), Corallina aberrans (flowers), Grateloupia chiangii (trees), Codium fragile (sea waves and coast), etc. The kanji letters of "Kamakura 鎌倉" was produced by Ms. Yurika Hara (the fourth-grade elementary school girl, Kamakura) using fronds of Dictyopteris latiuscula. |
